Vietnam & Cambodia: Two Countries, One River
From Saigon's Street Food to the Temples of Angkor
A 10-Day Journey from Saigon to Angkor Wat Along the Mekong
There are plenty of ways to combine Vietnam and Cambodia, but traveling between them along the Mekong River is one of the more interesting options.
I recently made this journey, combining time in Saigon, a three-night river cruise and Cambodia's capital and ancient temples. What stood out wasn't just the contrast between destinations, but the local guides whose personal stories and perspectives gave us a better understanding of both countries.
Details Make the Difference
Local Guides: The right guide does more than explain what you're looking at. In Vietnam and Cambodia, hearing firsthand accounts and personal perspectives helped connect the countries' histories with everyday life today. Those conversations were some of the most memorable parts of the trip.
Weather & Timing: Heat, humidity and seasonal rainfall can make a big difference in how you experience these destinations. Planning temple visits earlier in the day, building in breaks and choosing activities around the conditions can make the trip much more enjoyable.
Pacing Matters: Ten days across two countries can be a lot, especially when you're changing hotels and crossing borders. Allowing enough time in each destination—and knowing when not to add another activity—is just as important as deciding what to see.
Arrival & Departure Logistics: International flight schedules don't always align with hotel check-in and checkout times. Requesting early check-in after a long-haul flight or reserving a day room before a late-night departure can make a significant difference. These arrangements are best considered in advance, rather than left until arrival.
Day by Day

Days 3–5: Mekong River Cruise 🚢
Days 6–7: Phnom Penh 🇰🇭
Days 8–10: Siem Reap & Angkor 🛕
Suggested Itinerary
🥖 Days 1–2: Saigon — Start With the Food
Saigon is busy, noisy and full of contrasts. One minute you're passing French-era buildings, the next you're surrounded by motorbikes and street vendors.
We spent time learning to make bánh mì, walking through historic neighborhoods and seeing how much the city has changed. Having a local guide connect the food, architecture and history made the experience far more interesting.
🚢 Days 3–5: The Mekong — Take the Long Way to Cambodia
Rather than fly, we spent three nights aboard Heritage Line's Jayavarman, traveling upriver through the Mekong Delta and crossing into Cambodia.
The appeal isn't just the ship. It's getting off the river to visit villages, meet families and see traditional crafts still practiced along its banks. It's a different way to travel between two countries, and the journey becomes part of the experience.
🏙️ Days 6–7: Phnom Penh — More Than a Stop Along the Way
Cambodia's capital deserves time of its own, particularly for travelers interested in the country's history and how it continues to shape life today.
Our visit was brief, but it made me want to return for a longer stay. I'd consider adding a few nights at Rosewood Phnom Penh, combining a luxury city hotel with private guiding that goes beyond the major landmarks.
🛕 Days 8–10: Siem Reap — Angkor Is Worth the Trip
Angkor Wat may be one of Southeast Asia's most recognizable landmarks, but seeing it in person is something else entirely.
I was particularly taken with the scale and detail of the temples, from Angkor Wat to the tree roots winding through Ta Prohm and the enormous carved faces at Bayon. Even feeling under the weather, this was a highlight of my trip.
It's also where the right local guide makes all the difference. Understanding the history and stories behind these sites adds so much more than photographs ever could.
✈️ Getting There
For a trip covering both countries, flying into Ho Chi Minh City and departing from Siem Reap can help avoid unnecessary backtracking. Depending on your departure city and preferred airline, you'll likely connect through a major Asian hub.
I can help compare flight routes, coordinate international and regional connections, and arrange airport transfers and local transportation.
